Dr. Cathy Gutierrez

Cathy Gutierrez is an Associate Professor of Religion at Sweet Briar College where she has been teaching since 1998. The Religion faculty are dedicated to the approach of comparative religions and teach broadly across both time and space so that the students can understand the perspectives of others as well as investigating their own. In addition to introductory survey courses, Gutierrez teaches African, Latin American, Christian, Jewish, and American traditions as well as methodologies such as psychology, philosophy, and esotericism. Her research focuses on 19th century America and she has published on the Freemasons, the Free Love movement, and extensively on the
Spiritualists. Her monograph, Plato's Ghost: Spiritualism in the American Renaissance, will come out on Oxford University Press next fall. She enjoys the life of the campus, international cooking, and thanks to her students, is an avid Facebooker.
